Please scroll down for English version

“You never know where you’ll end up until you start the journey...” Looking back on his internship at renowned design firm Robarts Spaces, Liu Zheng (David) made an emotional statement.

For this 17-year-old boy, this internship experience is like a rich and interesting journey: he equipped himself well, kept moving forward following his favorite scenery——when the journey ends, he felt a full sense of accomplishment and even had the next stop to go in mind:

#01 “The Map”

Two years ago, David fell in love with design class. He wanted to study architectural design in a world-class university.

Knowing David’s goal and his readiness for internship in all aspects of his professional and interpersonal life, the teachers arranged an intensive two-week internship for him at Robarts Spaces, a leading design firm.

Just as David said in the interview, at the beginning, he thought that the internship in such an excellent company was to help print documents and pour coffee for seniors, but actually it was not.

The teacher in charge of the internship program and Robarts Spaces drew up a job description for him that was a practical “map” for his 2-week growth journey. It describes each “stop” of the internship journey -- what role to play, what departments to work in, what to learn...

David completed his internship step by step according to this map: “My position is assistant, first I have to get familiar with the studio, then I will do some marketing job, then I will work in the material department, and then I also need to visit the construction site...”

#02 “The Scenery”

“Traveling” through Robarts Spaces was a novel and fulfilling experience for David. Along the way, he saw a lot of “scenery”:

First, he helped to conduct competitive product investigation in the public relations department, searched and analyzed competitors’ logos, websites and mini programs, and formed concluding words. Then he went to the material department to learn the classification of materials and understand the characteristics and functions of different materials. And then he visited the construction site and met the contractor to see how the building “stood up” from the drawings. Finally, he came to the design department to learn and help around.

The last part is the most exciting and fulfilling part for David: not only worked with senior designer but also tried a small project beyond expectation.

“At that time, the design director was designing the interior space from the parking lot to the fourth floor for a client. The original color was a cool gray color, but the client wanted a warm color style. The director asked me to find an alternative scheme, and I thought of the color of the wood and found the brown of the wood grain... I got recognized by the director!”

A small sense of accomplishment inspired David to take a step forward spontaneously. “The client didn’t ask, and the director didn’t ask me to do it, but I saw a space on the drawings on the fourth floor, and I wanted to make it the CEO’s office.” This concept to draw for the CEO’s office was revised several times under the guidance of his mentor.

In 2 weeks, he learned where to start with three-dimensional drawings; he also learned the importance of lighting and how to show it on drawings...

#03 “Road Sign”

Seeing another better than oneself, one tries to equal him. The internship process not only made David firm in his dream of becoming a designer, but also allowed him to see his shortcomings and identify some specific directions for his efforts, as if he had found a road sign:

For example, right after his internship, he signed up for a sketch class. He was astonished to see the drawings drawn by his mentor and colleagues around him. “I’ve always liked drawing, and I never thought there was anything wrong with my basic skills. But after looking at my teachers’ drawings, I knew there was a big gap between me and them, and I wanted to learn sketching again.” David said.

In addition, he has made a medium-term plan for his Christmas vacation three months later: “The two-week internship is too short for me to complete a project. During the Christmas vacation, I plan to return to Robarts Spaces and go on a business trip with my senior colleagues!”

May David have a fruitful Christmas and may he be able to pursue his dream of studying architecture at Cornell University or pursuing architecture or engineering at Columbia University two years from now!

Next week, please look forward to the final episode of the internship documentary -- the summary report of the three interns.
